Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a frying pan. Brown both sides of the bread slices. Wipe them on paper towel. Lay a slice of ham onto each crust, trim following the edges of the bread. Put the crusts into a buttered ovenproof dish, sprinkle generously with Emmenthal cheese and top with butter. Put under the grill of the oven, preheated 10 minutes beforehand, only to gratin. Serve immediately.
